The Sacred Day
the invasion of God into the ordinary day
Unilateral love
Through my own reading on other religions, the agape love of Christianity proved unique. Doing to others as you would have done to yourself, the death on the Cross for sinners, and all of the other examples ran at countercurrents to life I saw around me.
a. Accept everyone at their word
This is a simple game for most of us to play. Business people and lawyers may have to make a few modifications if they want to play this game.
Here is the game: Accept everything everyone tells you as fact. If someone is late due to a certain problem, have great empathy for the problem and don’t mention the lateness. If someone says they can accomplish something, believe in them and give them all the reasons why you think they can get the job done. If someone thanks you for shopping at Walmart, express genuine appreciation that they would think kindly of you. Mention how much you enjoy shopping at their store. After all, they are apparently quite pleased that you shopped there that day. It’s actually a very creative game if you get into it.
Often the best way to love someone is to believe in them. God has handed the keys to the Kingdom to Christians. It is the tactic he uses. Amazingly, people often rise to your expectations. Those occasional responses are the fun part of the game.
